Description Storks are birds with long necks, beaks, and legs. Their feathers are white, brown, gray, black or some combination. The smallest stork which is known as Hammerkop has a height of 2 feet and wingspan of approximately 3 feet. On the other hand, the largest stork called Marabou can grow as high as 4.9 feet and its wingspan can reach up to 10.5 feet. The weight of the Marabou can reach 20 pounds, and the Hammerkop can weigh over a pound. They can naturally be found in all continents except for Antarctica. They normally live in the tropical regions with nearby water. The storks’ nests are often huge, with a diameter of over two meters and depth of around 3 meters. They usually build their nests on cliff ledges, trees, or sometimes on the ground. At present, there are 19 living species of this type of bird and many are migratory. When flying, they glide and soar to conserve energy. Storks are carnivorous animals and their typical diet consists of fishes, small reptiles, insects, small birds, shellfish, amphibians, small mammals, earthworms, and sometimes rodents. Some open-billed species utilize their beaks for prying open mussels, snails, and clams.

Status Some populations of storks are significantly declining due to habitat loss brought by deforestation and wetlands draining, poaching, and use of pesticides. Several species of storks such as the Oriental Stork, Storm’s Stork, Japanese White Stork, and Oriental White Stork are already classified as Endangered.
